Wanderlust: Rebirth

When I first saw this game in the Steam store, my first thought was, wow it looks like a SNES game, I'm happy they still make these kinds of games. I then began doubting if it actually was any good so I linked it to a dear friend and asked what he thought and he instantly said: "I want that... and I am buying it, right now...". And yes, he liked it and we've now played through the game once together. I therefore thought it only proper that I review it.

Wanderlust: Rebirth is in most part a dungeon crawler with simple controls. That's all on its own, but there's quite a bit of complexity hidden underneath.
You can choose from 4 different classes and 4 people can play at the same time. It's definitely recommended that you play this game with a friend, this is especially true in the later stages.

The controls are responsive and an obvious inspiration source for controls and visuals is the Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past. The style looks great, but you may want to adjust the settings to remove clouds because they can severely get in the way.
Your rewarded for playing well and the level up system is out of the ordinary. You get points that you use to get new skills after each level depending on your performance. For example if you get a 90% score you get 90 points to unlock skills. If you then replay the level, you can ever only recieve 10 points more from the remaining 10% you missed.

The loot system is a mixture between a crafting system and a drop-system. The games biggest flaw is the small stash-size for loot. This makes it difficult getting all the ingredients you need for a certain recipe, since you always need to throw away stuff to make room (stuff you would have actually needed later). This can be a hassle and requires you to always be aware of what you have and what to get, which honestly is a bit frustrating.
This is a minor issue though and a patch could easily remedy this problem.

Though there is story and dialog , chances are it won't entertain you that much. Ramming down hordes of enemies and collecting loot is what you came for and what will keep you interested.

Much like the Diablo games, the end in this game, isn't quite the end. In order to get the best ending it's a requirement to play through the story several times. So for those willing, there's more than just the 5 hour campaign to get here.

If you're looking for a 10€ hack and slash adventure game to play for a couple of hours with your friends, I definitely recommend this title!
